Another magazine I researched was ESPN the Magazine. On the cover of the latest issue the cover has a picture of Philadelphia Eagle's quarterback as a Thanksgiving day parade float. This goes along with the main story which highlights the recent success for Wentz, it also fits the Thanksgiving theme. The articles are either informative or argumentative about a topic in sports. For instance, one article in the magazine argues that success in basketball relies more on the plays run by teams rather than the amount of star power they have, and uses the Golden State Warriors as an example. Another article is all about the life of baseball hall of famer Roy Halladay, and what he has done for the sport. There is ads for the movie Jumanji, the company Ford, the network ESPN, etc. The advertisements appear after two articles or so. The magazine has won a general excellence award twice, they have also won an award in the service and lifestyle category.

Magazine Project-Research

One of the magazines I observed during my research was a basketball magazine called SLAM. The magazine's cover usually features a popular basketball player. For example, on the magazine's cover there is a picture of  Lonzo, Lamelo, and LiAngelo Ball side-by-side each in their team's jersey. This picture is meant to go along with the main story which tells readers about the Ball family's success over the past year. The articles in the magazine are mostly informative about what is going on in the sport of basketball, but there is also plenty of articles in which writers debate over certain topics in basketball. The ads in the magazine usually display products that basketball players and fans would be interested such as shoes, clothes, and gear. Advertisements appear after every couple of articles and take up a full page. The magazine has not won any awards yet.

Project Selection- My Decision

Due to the following reasons I have decided that my project will be a magazine. I think I possess the creativity that is needed for the magazine project. I also have chosen to work alone for the project because I will be able to work at my own pace instead of trying to keep up with others. Since I am working alone I think the magazine project is a better fit than the film. The genre of my magazine will most likely be sports related because I can easily get access for locations that I could use for photo-shoots. For instance, I can very easily walk over to the football field and start taking pictures. Also, I can just walk to a store like play it again and get different props at a cheap price.

Project Selection-Film

One of the many aspects of film production that I found interesting are the off-screen problems that viewers don't see. The makers of Ferris Bueller's Day Off  had problems with the cast, wardrobe, and shooting, yet they were still able to create one of the 80's most well-known movies. I also find the editing process because of the amount of time and work that is put into editing a film. Films often spend more time editing than they do actually filming. I already have most of the resources that are needed for this project. I think editing won't be a problem because I have had prior experience with editing. Like the magazine project, I think the biggest problem with the project will be making the connections to find places for filming. Another problem I might encounter is creating the best shots and angles for certain scenes of the film.

Project Selection-Magazine

The aspect of print journalism that I have found most interesting is what journalists call "following the money". I find this very interesting because it shows the process that journalists must go in order to make sure that a story is accurate and well supported. Another aspect of print journalism that interests me is the power a newspaper or magazine article. For instance, in All the Presidents Men the articles written by Woodward and Bernstein really changed the way people thought about politicians such as president Nixon. I believe that I possess the creativity that is needed for a project like this. I think a challenge that I would have to overcome during the magazine project is making connections that are involved with my magazine's topic. Without these connections I might not be able to find places for take photos which would be a major problem considering that one of the main parts of a magazine are pictures.
